Nigeria: Ife/Modakeke War Resumes

By Opeyemi Omotayo In Ile-Ife, 5 April 2000

Lagos — The people of Ife and Modakeke resumed their fighting this morning, a clear evidence that moves by President Obasanjo to end the fighting during his visit to the area two weeks ago had failed.

Sporadic gunshots were heard this morning in several parts of Ile-Ife as early as 5a.m. as the two communities tore at each other. P.M.News gathered that the two groups had vowed to attack one another as soon as the students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife conclude their examinations. The exams were concluded yesterday and true to their “pledge” the two warring communities resumed hostilities.

OAU students (who have ended their exams) as well as people wishing to travel out of the ancient town of Ile-Ife have been trapped in the town as they have not found public transport to travel out of the war-weary communities.

The body of one of the victims of the latest round of fighting was sighted this morning near the Obafemi Awolowo University main gate, just as the police have proved incapable of ending the fighting. They are in fact being accused by residents of the communities of aggravating it by making arms available to the warring parties.
