By Gbenga Olarinoye, 22 March 2002

OSUN State Government yesterday created an Ife East Local Government Area Office in Modakeke. Modakeke community has three of the 10 wards of Ife East Local Government.

Gov. Bisi Akande has advised the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade to inaugurate the Area Office not later than April 1st, this year.

Commodore Olabode George (rtd.), Chairman of the Presidential Peace Committee on Ife/Modakeke had recommended the establishment of an area office in Modakeke for peace to reign in the area.

But after waiting for almost two years for the creation of the area office with nothing of the sort in sight, Modakeke youths had, on March 1 this year declared self government for the community.

The people of Ife responded to the Modakeke action only last Wednesday describing it as a “prelude to another round of blood-bath.”

The people of Ife under the aegis of the Ife Action Council (IAC) at a news conference addressed in Ibadan stated that the Modakeke community should be held responsible should any crisis occur in the area again.

Following is the full text of the Osun State Government statement yesterday entitled: “Creation of Ife East Local Government Area Office in Modakeke, Ile-Ife.
