Nigeria: Modakeke Youths Threaten Parallel Government

By Hammed Bodunrin, 6 February 2002

Osogbo — Modakeke youths yesterday threatened to set up an internal government for the community following the non-implementation of the peace panel recommendation that an area office should be created for them.

In a statement by the Coalition of Modakeke Youths signed by its Coordinator, Mr. Wole Animashaun and five others made available to the press in Osogbo, the community lamented that 20 months after the decision to create an area office for them, nothing was done.

“Our Patience has been tasked to its limit and we have decided therefore to take our destiny in our hands,” he said.

The Olabode George-led peace committee had recommended among other things that an area office be created as an extension of Ife-East local government following the bloody clashes that greeted the location of the headquarters.

The coalition however observed that “we have watched with serious concern the way and manner the destiny of our community is being toyed with and our patience had been tasked to its limit.

“For over five years now, we as a community have not benefited anything from successive administration in Osun State. All our infrastructure have collapsed. No passable roads, no access to health facilities and other catalogue of deprivation not to talk of employment opportunity for our wards since everything is dominated in terms of local government.

“It is now over 20 months after the one sided resolution to the crisis was submitted, yet the 1/11 aspect (area office) that tilted in our favour had been most difficult to implement.

“Though we rejected the resolution in the presence of Mr. President because they were unfair, unjust, stage managed and partisanly one sided, to give a peace a chance, we decided not to rock the boat on its implementation.”

“We Modakekes are peace-loving people, we respect the constituted authority and the rule of law, yet we are marginalised, cheated and neglected.

“Due to the aforementioned reasons, we the youths in the area have resolved to set up our internal self rule with the mandate to carry out developmental programmes for the benefit of our people.”

They concluded that “if no government considered us entitled to same, we shall levy and collect dues for this purpose.”
