Nigeria: Ooni Blasts Modakekes

By Tunde Oladipo/Ile-Ife, 24 March 2000

Lagos — The Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade has verbally attacked the Modakeke Community, describing it as “the most disrespectful community in the state”.

The Ooni said that the community has turned itself into an “island and a tin-god that does not give regards to established authorities”.

“Modakekes have no respect for constituted authorities. They jump on people’s land and build anyhow without regard for the law. They connect NEPA lines without the authority of NEPA. They do not pay licences for their vehicles in the areas where they live, neither do they pay taxes in their areas of jurisdiction,” the Ooni complained.

Oba Sijuwade’s comments were part of a statement he could not deliver, apparently due to time constraint, when President Olusegun Obasanjo visited his Palace yesterday in Ile-Ife, further said that the Modakekes ” believe they have the monopoly of violence and so they have taken the laws into their own hands”.
